Hurstbourne Tarrant Historical Society – "Mince Pies, Mulled Wine and Talks from our Members"

Monday 12th December at 7:45pm at Hurstbourne Tarrant Community Centre

Our next meeting is our traditional pre-Christmas open meeting where our members will be giving the talks. We’ll hold our usual raffle and to start off the Christmas festivities there will be complementary mulled wine and mince pies on offer.

Sundials – Ancient and Modern, Andy Watson

Ancient Egyptian made sundials 3,500 years ago, medieval churches marked the time for services with sundials and Shakespeare said ‘Thou by thy dial’s shady stealth may’st know, / Time’s thievish progress to eternity’. Nowadays we may think of sundials as a decorative garden feature but they have a long and varied history. Andy will talk about the history of sundials and a bit about the theory and illustrate this with examples from Hampshire and farther afield.

The Kibbo Kift, Jon Tacey

The Kindred of the Kibbo Kift was a camping, hiking and handicraft group with ambitions to bring world peace. It was the first of three movements in England associated with the charismatic artist and writer John Hargrave (1894–1982). By 1931, the Kibbo Kift was well on the way towards becoming a political movement with a single-minded mission: focussing on the state of the British nation and spreading the Social Credit Gospel to the unemployed. Jon Tacey, whose family was closely involved with the Kibbo Kift will talk about the movement, Social Credit and his personal memories.

Open Tables, Bring Along Your Finds

What have you found in the garden whilst digging, in the loft while clearing out or hidden up the chimney? Do you know their history? Have you been able to identify them? How old are they? Bring along your finds, from Neolithic to modern, to our December meeting and we’ll put them on show for everyone to look at and maybe even help answer your questions!

Visitors are most welcome to join us (£3).
