The Hurstbourne Tarrant Historical
Society is a group of people who are interested in the
history of the village and surrounding area. The society
was formally constituted in May 2010 and meet monthly with
the exception of August and December. All meetings except
for outside visits will take place at The Royal British
Legion on Ibthorpe Road from October 2010. Please see the
programme of events for full details of what is
happening and when with the society.
The society aims to look into various
aspects of history whether local, social, family or
archaeological. Society meetings will cover various
subjects and ideas for new subjects/studies are most welcome
from members. The
constitution states a full list of the aims of the
society.
The committee is made up of seven
members who are listed below along with a brief introduction
to who they are and what projects they are currently working
on.
MIKE NASH, Chairman – I’ve lived in the village almost
18 years and interested in everything! At the moment am
looking at the "ritual marks" in our church with Sue Jopson
and hope to publish shortly, I will then be starting work
with Kim Vella on past village pubs.
PAUL SEAGER, Vice-Chairman – I live in the village and
I'm currently working on compiling a photographic history of
the village, ranging from the earliest photos to modern day
in an attempt to show how the village has changed. I have
been scanning photos that have been given to the History
Society on a loan basis. I'm hoping visitors to the website
may be able to loan any photos or even scan them themselves
and email them to me.
DAVID JOPSON, Secretary – I live in the village and
besides
being Secretary to the Society my main interest at present
is the family tree. However it is hard going. Additional
assistance is given to Sue when needed with her projects.
KIM VELLA, Membership Officer – I’ve lived in the
village for 20 years and I’m looking at the range of pubs we
have had in the village. There used to be 5 many years ago!
Working alongside Mike we hope to produce a small booklet of
our findings!
SUE JOPSON, Programme Officer - I have lived in the
village for 11 years and I am working on the history of the
Flower Show 1913/2013 with Julie and I am also interested in
apotropaic or ritual marks which were used to protect
buildings from witches. I have found many such marks at St
Peters the church in our village.
LAURA SYKES, Publications Officer – I’ve lived in the
village since 1994 and since then I have been building up a
village archive of books and documents, as well as notes of
material available in record offices and libraries. With
help from a database specialist at Cricklade College, I am
also compiling a village database.
JULIE MUIRHEAD, Publicity Officer – I live in Andover
and I have an interest in many villages of the Bourne Valley
due to my ancestry going back many hundreds of years locally
and I’m specifically interested in Family, Local & Social
History. I’m currently a mature student studying for a
History degree with the Open University in addition to
studying with the Institute of Heraldic and Genealogical
Studies on their Genealogy Correspondence Course. I will be
working with Sue looking into the history of the Hurstbourne
Tarrant Flower Show.
